Kitchen Design
Kitchen Design
From: Alice W.
Carl,
We found a house plan on line that we really love, except for the kitchen. I love to cook so the kitchen design is paramount to me.
Should we, or can we, have the plans altered before we buy them or after we buy them, or should we forget these plans and keep on looking?
Alice
Hi, Alice,
The probability of finding the “perfect” house plan with everything just the way you want it is probably “zero”.
But a kitchen can be remodeled anytime. It can be remodeled on paper before you build fairly easy.
If the kitchen on that house plan is of sufficient size, you should be OK, as long as walls don’t have to be moved to design your “ideal” kitchen.
You can redesign the layout easily. You can even move doors and windows in the kitchen without redrawing the entire house plan as long as they (the windows or doors) aren’t part of an important street elevation (how the house looks from the street).
Any kitchen designer or kitchen design software program can assist you with your dreams. Kitchen designers are available free at most building material suppliers.
Software programs, such as this one from Ikea, are free.
It’s a neat little tool to play with for laying out (planning) your basic kitchen (any size).

Print out a sample floor plan of the house you found and play with redesigning the kitchen.
Don’t let the kitchen “sink” your dreams…ha, ha.
