Women Home Builders
From: Melissa
Carl, Have you checked out firstdaycottage.com? If you can, I'd love your comments on this home building kit and the feasibility of actually getting it built within the money parameters they write on their website.
It's a great kit, in my opinion anyway, and I wanted your feedback.
Do you think a couple of women could complete this project within a reasonable amount of time? Women with remodeling/construction skills; not women with no prior experience. Reasonable being relative!
Hi Melisa,
I think it's a neat idea! I think their pricing is OK. I'd be careful about being too optimistic as to what the finished cost will be. Finished cost will depend on how much your labor costs will be, as well as foundation, well, septic, HVAC, Elec., Plumb, and etc.
Work it all out on a spreadsheet before you spend any $$$. Use my free spreadsheets on byoh.com (http://byoh.com/spreadsheets.htm)
Firstdaycottage.com gives you a very good idea of what to expect on their "Building FAQs"
I don't know where you are building, but don't forget shipping costs.
For those interested, here's a picture of a FirstDay Cottage house going up!
Women building houses is not a novel concept.
I’ve been successfully teaching men and women just how easy it is to be their own General Contractor for over 25 years.
I have been involved in financing women who were their own General Contractors and did superlative jobs!
Here’s a short video from About.com on the subject:

Melissa, if you have any questions down the road, don't hesitate to ask.
Good luck,
Carl
